Ekstraklasa Action Round-up

Later than normal but here it is, opinions and few lines about every game played in Polish Ekstraklasa this weekend.

We start with Friday games and although Cracow Derby where obviously the bigger match to report on, let’s take a look what happened in Lubin where Zagłębie won narrowly with Widzew Łódź. Dawid Plizga scored the only goal after lovely taken free kick but more happened on the stands. After losing last weekend derby with Ślask Wrocław, Zagłębie fans turned their back on players and club saying that too many bad things are going on inside club structures. They want new board and bigger investments in the team to reach their ambitions. Until then, they probably will not support their team. How stupid is that? Word on Widzew – if their current manager, Andrzej Kretek will lose with Cracovia at home next round, he will probably end his spell in Łódź as Jacek Zieliński seems to be the man who can take over after him.

Back to Cracow where Wisła beats Cracovia in derby after very boring, uninspiring and very average game where the winner came after ninety-five minutes when Andraż Kirm passed the ball to Nourdin Boukhari who scored easily. It was not deserved but thankfully something at least happened. Crowds that showed up at Cracovia’s stadium were not happy but supported their team effort despite the club still being last in the league with only four points won in twelve games played this season. New manager, Jurij Szatalow has hell of a job to do there.

Górnik Zabrze drew with Polonia Bytom 1-1 and when it looks surprising that hosts did not win that one, it must be said that they were very unfortunate and without half of their normal match squad. They were leading and in total control when the only mistake happened and Magiera scored an own goal. Polonia stayed without an effort on goal all game but it was enough to give them much needed point. As to surprises – Śląsk proved that the crisis is over with win in Bełchatow over GKS. The only goal came in second half after smart move from Mila, Gikiewicz finished by Sotirović. Śląsk is the only team that won in Bełchatów, also not losing a single goal in their last three away games. Worth noting that they have not lost in last five games and with good results following recent performances, they may be much higher in the table very soon.

Legia finally played like a team with Championship on their mind and they have deservedly won against Jagiellonia Białystok 2-0. Really strong statement from the hosts, especially happy they can be about their defence performance while Vrdoljak, Rybus and Radović continue to impress in the middle of the pitch. Last game of Saturday was the match between Arka Gdynia and Korona Kielce. Unbeaten on their artificial pitch, Arka’s players were impressing in the attack for the first time this season and Korona was very fortunate to be still in the game after first half. Labukas and Zawistowski scored for the hosts while the only goal for visitors came after powerful volley from Edi.

On Sunday two great results for Lechia Gdańsk and Ruch Chorzów while Polonia Warszawa and Lech Poznań continue to struggle in the league. Starting with the game in Polish capital, it must be said that Lechia was the better team and especially Traore impressed again with his great performance capped with two goals. Visitors showed really good football, out-passing their rivals completely and giving them not enough space while defending the results. Only Adrian Mierzejewski showed that he still deserves to get monthly wages from the club – Polonia’s owner, Mr. Józef Wociechowski once again proved that he is the man in charge and froze all the payments till the end of the round. “I’d rather spent money on poor kids than give it to those lazy scumbags” – he said to the press today. What happens next with him? He will play alone or become the manager? Nothing will surprise me in Polonia but I suspect that romance between Wojciechowski and the club will end sooner than later.

Lech Poznań still struggling in Ekstraklasa after impressing in European competition. They have beaten Manchester City on Thursday and couldn’t get a point in Chorzów on Sunday – what the hell is wrong with them?! Łukasz Janoszka scored for Ruch but winners will not be cheered as it is all about Lech’s performance and problems Bakero has after being in charge less than a week. And what a week that was for this club.

League standings can be found HERE while goals from this round can be watched HERE, enjoy.
