There are separate opinions. Some say that after truly pathetic display by polish teams in Europe we are back in action in our poor league and after all, there's nothing to be happy about as interest in our football is even smaller. But the others say that continental competitions don't say everything about Ekstraklasa and everybody should go to the stadiums, watch the game and find something in it to enjoy the entertainment. While having in my mind what the first group is saying (and partly agreeing with it), I watched in TV, I went to the stadium to judge whether anything changed for worse or for good.
And I enjoyed it, really. There was not any rapid change to the level of football but few new interesting players, new looks of the teams and better attendance made me feel better about Polish football. Not to the state me thinking about our football positively but... You know, excitement. It was there, You could feel it in the air at the stadium. But what could we observe?
GKS Bełchatów 2-0 Polonia Bytom (Fonfara 10', Kuswik 84') Great start for the hosts but they faced team which destination is to be relegated. Guests were really poor, no idea how to attack, how to defend. It will be very long season for Polonia, but also GKS should be aware of the opposition they played in first round.
Górnik Zabrze 0-2 Polonia Warszawa (Sobiech 17', Mierzejewski 69') They spend big and they started great - Polonia Warszawa off with a win but it wasn't easy by any measure. First 25 minutes for the guests, '1 million euro baby' Artur Sobiech scored on his debut but then hosts had their chances to make it level. They didn't and Polonia took their chance when Gołębiewski, Bruno and Mierzejewski linked very well and the last one finished it into the net. Late in the game, Ebi Smolarek made his debut for Polonia but he is clearly out of form only after one full week of training with the team.
Widzew Łódź 1-1 Lech Poznań (Sernas 84' - Rudnevs 77') Current champion is still toothless and clueless on the pitch with Semir Stilić being in the worst form of his career. Horrible injury (head concussion) to Bartosz Bosacki saw him being taken to hospital and the game rose to the expectations in the last ten minutes. Rudnevs scored with a lovely header on his debut for Lech but Sernas, very active throughout the game, leveled the score after visitors keeper, Jasmin Burić, did... 'a Robert Green'.
Korona Kielce 1-1 Zagłębie Lubin (Niedzielan 66' - Bartczak 76') It is now some kind of standard that hosts are playing very well, attacking neatly, creating great chances, scoring but then letting the opposition to level or even get a winner after horrible defending. That was the scenario of this game with Niedzielan scoring his first for Korona, and then Bartczak making it a draw with close-range header. Though they got the point, Zagłebie did not rose to the expectations before the season.
Lechia Gdańsk 0-0 Ruch Chorzów Guests came to Gdańsk with aim to get at least a point and made their plan real thanks to some good defending from Sadlok, and good goalkeeping from Pilarz. It wasn't easy game for them with hosts attacking entire game and being quite close to getting the winner. Brazilian Deleu (Lechia) was one of the better players on the pitch, which maybe will change mind of those booing him for being black. Yes, really. Pathetic.
Śląsk Wrocław 0-0 Jagiellonia Białystok Very, very entertaining but goalless draw, hosts being by far the better team but only great goalkeeping show from Sandomierski stopped them from getting the three points. New to Śląsk, striker Diaz, winger Sobota and defensive midfielder Kaźmierczak impressed or at least did their job with the second one enjoying some great few runs with the ball on his debut in Ekstraklasa at 22. Visitors showed some glimpses of good form from Aris games but they were clearly tired after long journey back from Greece.
Wisła Kraków 1-0 Arka Gdynia (Małecki 24') As expected, vice-champions won but should have made it more impressive after being the better side for whole game. Visitors came for goalless draw, had very, very limited chances but with a doze of luck could get out of this game with a point. Wisła in need of inspiration and form, the talk about new manager did not helped them but there is no excuse for Wisła players after losing twice to Qarabagh in Europa League.
You can watch the goals at EKSTRAKLASA TV. My team of the week: Sandomierski - Deleu, Fonfara, Sadlok, Skerla - Sobota, Małecki, Mierzejewski, Paweł Sobolewski - Sernas, Niedzielan.
Due to Legia Warszawa friendly game with Arsenal, game between Legia and Cracovia will be played on next Monday. And about great show, Legia 5-6 Arsenal - we waited so long for such an entertaining match between Polish side and proper Europe opposition that the players themselves were probably in a state of shock while leading 3-1 at half time. The shock continued and thanks to some horrible defending at set-pieces, Arsenal made great comeback but hosts were close and made their mark also in the second half. It was more of shocking goalkeeping from every keeper involved (Antolović and Machnowskyj for Legia, Fabiański and Szczęsny for Arsenal) but You should take a look for the game opener, great move from Legia and shot from Cabral. New stadium is now opened and in Legia they couldn't imagine a better way to do so.
1st LEAGUE UPDATE Piast Gliwice won in extra time with ambitious GKS Katowice and is on good run of two wins. Six points after two games has also ŁKS Łódź, this time thanks to a win against Dolcan Ząbki with young Jakub Kosecki scoring his second of the campaign. Odra, after horrible start week ago, now won away in Poznań against Warta and changes made to the squad proved their worth. Narrow wins for several clubs, mostly the hosts, with Pogoń Szczecin, Ruch Radzionków, Górnik Łęczna and GKP Gorzów Wielkopolski adding three points each to their season tally. Robert Dejman the hero of Podbeskidzie after scoring a brace against Górnik Polkowice, and the only draw of the round had happened in Kluczbork where MKS shared points with Kolejarz Stróże.
